Whitefield Cottage stands on the site of an ancient small Saxon village dated to at least 1200 years ago.

The village is described in the Domesday Book (1086 AD) as ‘Whitefell’, perhaps because of the pieces of quartz found above the Cottage on Whitefield Common.
